Does Medicare Cover Blood Pressure Monitors?

Medicare does not typically cover blood pressure monitors, except for in limited instances. Medicare Advantage plans cover blood pressure monitors in the same way as Original Medicare and may offer benefits not found in Original Medicare.

Part B of Original Medicare may cover a blood pressure monitor if your doctor recommends an ambulatory blood monitoring device (ABPM), or if you're undergoing renal dialysis at home. Otherwise, Original Medicare will not typically cover a blood pressure monitor.

What blood pressure monitoring equipment does Medicare pay for?

Medicare Part B medical insurance may sometimes cover blood pressure monitors if:

  • You are undergoing renal dialysis at home

  • Your doctor recommends an ambulatory blood monitoring device (ABPM).

An ABPM is a non-invasive monitor that measures your blood pressure in 24-hour cycles and stores the measurements in the device. An ABPM is only covered by Medicare if your doctor determines that you have suspected white coat hypertension (high blood pressure induced by anxiety or stress from visiting a doctor’s office or hospital).

We recommend that you speak with your doctor directly to learn more about blood pressure monitors and whether or not they are recommended for your use.

How much does a blood pressure monitor cost with Medicare?

Even if Medicare covers your blood pressure monitor, there are some out-of-pocket costs you should expect to pay, which may include:

  • Part B deductible
In 2024, the Medicare Part B deductible is $240 per year.

  • Part B coinsurance or copayment
Once you meet your Medicare deductible, you will usually pay 20 percent of the Medicare-approved amount for many doctor’s services.

There is no annual limit on how much you could pay for the Part B coinsurance in a given year.

Medicare Advantage plans can cover some of your health care costs

Medicare Advantage plans are an alternative to Original Medicare, and they are required to cover everything that Part A and Part B covers.

If your blood pressure monitor is covered by Original Medicare, it will also be covered by a Medicare Advantage plan.

Some Medicare Advantage plans also offer other benefits not included in Original Medicare.

A licensed insurance agent can help you learn more about Medicare Advantage plans and find plans in your area that can help cover your healthy lifestyle.
