What dental services are covered by Original Medicare?

Original Medicare does not provide coverage for routine dental services, such as:

  • Regular dental exams
  • Fillings
  • Cleanings
  • Tooth extractions
  • Dentures
  • Root canals

Original Medicare will only cover a dental procedure if it is deemed medically necessary as part of a covered benefit.

For example, if you are hospitalized after suffering a fall that caused damage to your teeth or jaw, your inpatient hospital costs would be covered by Medicare Part A.

Medicare may cover a dental exam that is required as part of preparation for a surgery such as a procedure to treat cancer in the jaw. Medicare will cover the cost of the exam but may not cover all of the dental work that must be performed as a result of the exam.
